Guidelines for Visitors

The Guesthouse is intended as a place where people may come to share in some way in the atmosphere of silence, recollection and prayer of the monastic community. We therefore ask our all visitors to respect the silence and peace of the monastery and to co-operate in maintaining it by observing the following Guidelines:

Guesthouse Timetable

6.45 a.m. Mass 8.00 a.m. Breakfast 11.30 a.m. Sext 12.00 p.m. Lunch 4.00 p.m. Vespers 6.30 p.m. Compline 7.00 p.m. Supper

The normal length of a visit is two days. Retreats may be arranged with the Guestmaster. The first Sunday of the month is a day of retreat for the Community in which we observe a more strict silence and solitude. Casual visits to members of the Community are not allowed on this day. Guests who wish to stay should arrange beforehand with the Guestmaster the purpose and duration of their visit, the number of visitors, time of arrival and departure and attendance at meals. Note that vistors are responsible for their own transport. Guests are encouraged to attend Lauds and Mass, Vespers and Compline in Church each day. They are not to enter the enclosure of the monastery which is reserved for the community alone. They are asked particularly to respect the silence, to avoid noisy conversations and to move quietly, especially during the hours of the night. Radios and cassetteplayers must not be used except with headphones. Guests are expected to retire to their rooms at 8 p.m. and to make a contribution towards the high running costs of the Guesthouse.
